In the Shadows House where I reside, the presence of shadows is expected, and none would question who or what we are. And outside of it... the people who live in the surrounding villages have polarizing views about us. It's better to avoid interacting with them altogether.
So... I'm not used to being asked these questions. But if it's from a place of sincere curiosity, then I don't hate it.
In my case, there's less combat and more... [ how to put it? ] carefully navigating a labyrinth of rules and political subtleties at the risk of being sentenced to death for a single misstep.
I believe that this conversation alone would amount to several violations.
A noble of the Shadows family must not appear in public unaccompanied by a Face. They must speak in the first person, referring to oneself by one's name at all times. Children must not speak to adults or outsiders unless granted special permission.
... To name a few. A single violation may be a mere faux pas, but repeated violations could result in being sent to the soot pipes, or being disposed of.
