Yes... it's a bit uncomfortable, but perhaps unavoidable.
In the Shadows House where I reside, the presence of shadows is expected, and none would question who or what we are. And outside of it... the people who live in the surrounding villages have polarizing views about us. It's better to avoid interacting with them altogether.
So... I'm not used to being asked these questions. But if it's from a place of sincere curiosity, then I don't hate it.
In my case, there's less combat and more... [ how to put it? ] carefully navigating a labyrinth of rules and political subtleties at the risk of being sentenced to death for a single misstep.
I believe that this conversation alone would amount to several violations.
A noble of the Shadows family must not appear in public unaccompanied by a Face. They must speak in the first person, referring to oneself by one's name at all times. Children must not speak to adults or outsiders unless granted special permission.
... To name a few. A single violation may be a mere faux pas, but repeated violations could result in being sent to the soot pipes, or being disposed of.
That's seriously messed up. [ she's dealt with overbearing and too many rules before, but getting killed for breaking a few rules? the soot pipes don't sound pleasant for a shadow either ]

[ a trail of smoke begins to rise from the top of her head. ]
... Please don't stare at my face. I can assure you, you won't be able to make anything out that way.
no subject
[ hesitating a bit, but she cannot help herself ]
... Look, I'm sorry.... I gotta ask! Why is it all shadowed out? What's with the smoke?
no subject
Yes, I suppose it's normal to have questions about that. I apologize.
I am a shadow. That soot... it comes out when I feel negative emotions. It's very troublesome.
no subject
[ then a bit sheepishly ]
I guess it can't help to have all these people staring and asking personal questions, huh?

[ she seems a bit awkward and contrite. she's learned her lessons about judging people on the way they look in this murdergame specifically ]
But yeah! Sincere curiosity. Just getting to know you a bit better. You can ask me questions if you want, too.
no subject
... Are you really a ninja?
[ since that word did appear about 100 times in her profile. ]
no subject
Though, for the record, we don't add the word ninja in front of everything we do. That's stupid.
no subject
[ cool pose! but, ]
I always imagined ninjas would be a bit more... subtle?
no subject
[ is she. is she really ]
no subject
[ if you say so. ]
You're very young, too. It must be dangerous work.
no subject
[ don't sound so excited about it, yuffie ]
... But whaddya mean, I'm very young! You're younger than me!
[ accusing point the way a teenager would ]
no subject
no subject
[ miss shadow with the polarizing opinions on her ]
no subject
But... it's of a different kind, I think.
no subject
[ tilting her head a bit ]
no subject
I believe that this conversation alone would amount to several violations.
no subject
[ what the hell! ]
Having a conversation can get you sentenced to death? Is that because you're a Shadow?
no subject

Who came up with that crap?
no subject
no subject
[ or is it just that she has no other choice... ]
no subject
no subject
[ but it's not like yuffie can do anything about her home situation ]
Well, just so you know, there's only one Yuffie Rule! And it's "do whatever you want"!
[ yuffie already does this, let's be real ]
no subject
[ a little lighter now. ]
I'll try to make the most of this freedom for the time that I have it.
