No I'm kidding. It's startling to see Lavi again--a man he knows in a situation he doesn't recognize, and one that seems so much more serious than his own ever was. But more than that, he's wrapped up in this exchange from Kate's perspective--the fear, the guilt, the helplessness. It makes his heart ache, seeing her suffer, knowing that it can't be changed.
When it ends, he doesn't say anything right away. All he does is kneel down and wrap her in a warm hug.]
[He strokes her hair gently, uncaring, as usual, of the soot that might get on his clothes. He lets her rest for a little while, and then, softly but firmly--]
We won't let them take your ending away. [He never intended to allow that to begin with, but especially not when she suffered so terribly for it.]
