It was scary, yeah. But we managed to avoid it after that, at least for a while.
[ partners, though... that's an even bigger risk, isn't it? only one person to lose instead of three. ]
Having the choice is an advantage, I'd think, but it's just as scary an option. [ you could at least opt out if you weren't prepared for it. ] Did you agree to it? Forming that partnership.
... Yes. Those who formed a partnership would have access to greater powers, and would even have a wish granted for them. The rewards outweighed the risks... especially as someone who didn't have much power to begin with.
We had a pre-determined partner, but it was our choice to pursue and identify them. So if there was anyone I would prefer not to partner with, I could simply not approach them to find out.
... Mine was... already a trusted friend of mine. But he was trying to avoid finding his partner, so it took a long time to find out it was him.
[ she's a little quiet at that first part. it's complicated. ]
... A little. But, also... well. There's no telling how people might react to seeing a person with no face. Ordinarily, people would be scared, or... worse.

[ local normie with no powers... ]
We're you able to choose your partner? What was yours like, did you get along?

Glad you got along already, them. Is that why he agreed?

But I told him that I'd narrowed it down to him, and that he should partner with me if he had a wish he was willing to give his life for.
Eventually, he thought of something that meant that much to him.

So you must have had a wish, too.

I didn't want to die. But, if I could accomplish my goal... It would be worth the risk.
no subject
What was your goal? Did you manage it?
no subject
But... I don't know. I wound up here again, just one day after returning.

[ not judgmental. he understands being powerless. being trapped. ]
You too? [ a bit of sympathy bleeding into his voice. ] Is that why you were so freaked out the first day?

... A little. But, also... well. There's no telling how people might react to seeing a person with no face. Ordinarily, people would be scared, or... worse.

...Do you really not have a face, though, or is it just that we can't see it?
no subject
[ she brings a hand up to her face. to feel over it for a moment. ]
Closer to the latter, I suppose. The shape is the same as a human's, but... no one can see a shadow's face.
