She's stunned to see regular human kids involved — she'd thought maybe she and the rest of the flesh faces were the freaks in Kate's eyes.
That's not the point though. There's accusations flung, references to higher orders and subterfuge. Kate starts speaking strangely, too. Third person isn't a great place to jump for an argument, but with all the allusions to her starting as something else (a "morph?"), maybe the disconnect is more than affectation.
Then the soot flies for real, and Camille comes back to reality choking on a phantom smog.]
Kate? [All right, her throat is slowly wising up. Three more pathetic coughs and she tries again.] What was that all about?
