[Which isn't super promising considering how many games are apparently out there in the world, but he's choosing to believe Teucer has been safe, for his own sanity.] He probably still has the real one, I think--or this one will be returned to him once all this is over, with him none the wiser. It doesn't really matter so long as he's safe, but... I don't want it to be taken from him.

No I'm kidding. It's startling to see Lavi again--a man he knows in a situation he doesn't recognize, and one that seems so much more serious than his own ever was. But more than that, he's wrapped up in this exchange from Kate's perspective--the fear, the guilt, the helplessness. It makes his heart ache, seeing her suffer, knowing that it can't be changed.
When it ends, he doesn't say anything right away. All he does is kneel down and wrap her in a warm hug.]
[He strokes her hair gently, uncaring, as usual, of the soot that might get on his clothes. He lets her rest for a little while, and then, softly but firmly--]
We won't let them take your ending away. [He never intended to allow that to begin with, but especially not when she suffered so terribly for it.]
Mm. I'm not surprised--he's a good guy. [He even liked Scaramouche and Chandra... why did he do that... Lavi...] I never did think he belonged in hell with us.
