[ well he doesn't really want to talk about this with a kid, but he also doesn't want to hold back or look down on kate, so he'll explain with some hesitation. ]
There were more teams than this in the Reaper's Game. Each one had four members, but if any team dropped down to one, they'd automatically be erased. Someone from a team of two was doing the erasure, but something went wrong, so they were both just... gone.
It sounds like that isn't supposed to be the case here, at least.
Ah... That must have been horrifying. And stressful, too.
[ to have to always worry about who might suddenly drop dead because of the loss of their teammates... ]
... There was something similar in the village I was in... We were able to form partners, at the risk of dying when one's partner is lost. But there were ways to avoid that in most cases, so it was usually not a problem, so long as we were careful.
It was scary, yeah. But we managed to avoid it after that, at least for a while.
[ partners, though... that's an even bigger risk, isn't it? only one person to lose instead of three. ]
Having the choice is an advantage, I'd think, but it's just as scary an option. [ you could at least opt out if you weren't prepared for it. ] Did you agree to it? Forming that partnership.
... Yes. Those who formed a partnership would have access to greater powers, and would even have a wish granted for them. The rewards outweighed the risks... especially as someone who didn't have much power to begin with.
We had a pre-determined partner, but it was our choice to pursue and identify them. So if there was anyone I would prefer not to partner with, I could simply not approach them to find out.
... Mine was... already a trusted friend of mine. But he was trying to avoid finding his partner, so it took a long time to find out it was him.
[ she's a little quiet at that first part. it's complicated. ]
... A little. But, also... well. There's no telling how people might react to seeing a person with no face. Ordinarily, people would be scared, or... worse.

[ local normie with no powers... ]
We're you able to choose your partner? What was yours like, did you get along?

... Mine was... already a trusted friend of mine. But he was trying to avoid finding his partner, so it took a long time to find out it was him.

Glad you got along already, them. Is that why he agreed?
no subject
But I told him that I'd narrowed it down to him, and that he should partner with me if he had a wish he was willing to give his life for.
Eventually, he thought of something that meant that much to him.

So you must have had a wish, too.

I didn't want to die. But, if I could accomplish my goal... It would be worth the risk.
no subject
What was your goal? Did you manage it?

But... I don't know. I wound up here again, just one day after returning.

[ not judgmental. he understands being powerless. being trapped. ]
You too? [ a bit of sympathy bleeding into his voice. ] Is that why you were so freaked out the first day?

...Do you really not have a face, though, or is it just that we can't see it?
no subject
[ she brings a hand up to her face. to feel over it for a moment. ]
Closer to the latter, I suppose. The shape is the same as a human's, but... no one can see a shadow's face.
